MS Carissima Review
Review of MS Carissima
MS Carissima cruise ship (formerly MS Viking Sky and “MS Schwentine” Hotelschiff) was launched in 1999. She was one of eight new riverboats introduced by Viking Cruises between 1999 and 2001, and remains the company’s oldest vessel operating on the Danube River. With her all-inclusive program (covering both airfare and shore excursions), MS Carissima offers not only a comprehensive historical and cultural experience but also excellent value for money. Most of the crew come from Central and Eastern Europe. The official onboard language is English, and all crew and tour guides are fluent.

Cabins
The ship offers 71 staterooms divided into three categories (A, B, and C). A-cabins are located on the Upper Deck, B-cabins on the Middle Deck, and C-cabins on the Main Deck. All cabins are outside and identical in size (150 ft² / 14 m²). A- and B-cabins feature wall-to-wall picture windows, while C-cabins have half-height opening windows.
Standard cabin amenities include hotel-style twin beds (convertible to double), HDTV (with satellite reception and real-time bow camera views), phone, wardrobe, en-suite bathroom (WC, glass-door shower, hairdryer, and premium bath products), electronic safe box (in the closet), and individually controlled air conditioning.
Shipboard facilities
The ship’s 150-seat restaurant, located on the Middle Deck, serves buffet-style breakfast and single open-seating lunch and dinner. A light lunch buffet is offered daily in the lounge. Viking’s open-seating dining policy encourages guests to socialize by sitting at different tables throughout the voyage. Meals are prepared by Western European chefs and feature a combination of local specialties and international cuisine. Occasional themed dinners are also offered.
The Sky Lounge & Bar is an indoor observation lounge offering 180-degree panoramic river views. It features a full bar and dance floor, furnished with comfortable sofas, chairs, and small three-seat tables. Entertainment options include movies (on a drop-down screen), professional lectures, themed dance evenings, and culinary tastings showcasing local wines, cheeses, delicacies, and spirits.
Most passengers are retired couples aged 65 and older, with some travelers in their 40s and 50s. This is not a cruise designed for honeymooners, young couples, or families. The relaxed, early-to-bed atmosphere appeals primarily to guests seeking a quiet journey focused on culture and leisure.
