Review of Kapitan Demidov icebreaker
MS Kapitan Demidov ("ледокол Капитан Демидов") is an icebreaking vessel owned and operated by Rosmorport. “Rosmorport” is a Russian FSUE (“Federal State Unitary Enterprise”) created in 2012 by the order of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Transport.
One of the Russian river icebreaker ships, Kapitan Demidov is of the "Evdokmov"-class ships. The ship was named after Alexander Demidov Veniaminovich (1928-1993) - Captain of the river fleet, winner of the State Prize of the USSR (awarded 1984).
In March 2012, the icebreakers Chudinov and Demidov escorted a convoy of 17 cargo vessels to the Azov-Don Sea Canal. On December 11, 2012, Rosmorport's Azov Basin Branch ice-breakers started performing duties in Taganrog Bay (Azov Sea). The ships Moshkin, Chudinov and Demidov provided safe mooring of merchant vessels near Elenina sandspit (in the Azov Sea's eastern part). In February 2014, icebreaker Demidov performed an individual escort of Sheng Qiang (DWT 45706, a Chinese-flagged bulk carrier). The professional performance of the crew allowed to escort the carrier, which was going in ballast to Berdyansk (Ukraine), from the western part of Azov Sea, where it was influenced by heavy winds and driven by drifting ice fields.
Kapitan Demidov itinerary program offers sailings in the Sea of Azov (southeast Europe).
